WORK HOURS: 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PMThe Senior Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the city’s network infrastructure. This role ensures the stability and integrity of in-house and cloud-based network services, including planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. The Senior Network Engineer will also analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end-user training where required.The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.Design and deploy functional networks (LAN, WLAN, WAN)Configure and install various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS)Monitor network performance and ensure system availability and reliabilityMonitor and maintain daily backupsDiagnose and troubleshoot network problems and outagesPerform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes, and security configurationsMonitor system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planningProvide support and troubleshooting to resolve issuesWork within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval, and success of changes made to the network infrastructureDevelop and maintain installation, operations, and configuration procedures.Select and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the city’s security teamLiaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolutionProvide technical support after normal work hours when necessary.Mentor and train junior network engineering staffConsistently provide excellent customer service.Ability to write reports and procedure manuals.Project lead for the planning and implementation of all Network IT Projects.Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related fieldMinimum of 5 years of experience in network administration and engineeringProfessional certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, or equivalentStrong understanding of network infrastructure and network hardwareAbility to implement, administer, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices, including wireless access points, firewall, routers, switches, controllersKnowledge of application transport and network infrastructure protocolsAbility to create accurate network diagrams and documentation for design and planning network communication systemsProven experience with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practicesExcellent communication skills, both written and verbalStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsPreferred Qualifications:Advanced certifications in network securityExperience working in a government or public sector environmentFamiliarity with cloud networking solutions and servicesFamiliarity with Cisco DNA and ISEPhysical Requirements:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.Skills:Strong Knowledge of networking technologies including TCP/IP, IPSEC, Routing protocols, 802.1x.Skills in Cisco Router and Switch configuration and TCP/IP planning.Skills in Cisco Hardware, Cisco IOS, TCP/IP, Networking and Troubleshooting.Strong Knowledge of Cisco Pix Firewalls, Remote Access/VPN, Configuring, Security and monitoring Skills in Microsoft Server and Desktop Operating Systems, Exchange Server.Strong Knowledge in Microsoft Active Directory, Roles, Deployment, Maintaining and Support. Ability to engineer high level network and engineering solutions using open standard technology. Ability to engineer, integrate and support a switched layer 2 environment.Ability to engineer, integrate and support a layer 3 Inter Vlan routed infrastructure.Ability to engineer, integrate and support multiple routing protocols including BGP, OSPF and EIGRP.Ability to engineer, integrate and support Spanning Tree Protocol in a multi-vendor bridged environment.Ability to engineer, integrate and support Lan, WAN and Metro wireless networks to include best practices and standards.Ability to engineer, integrate and support VMware virtualized environments in a clustered SAN solution.Ability to engineer, integrate and support iSCSI storage area networks. Ability to read and interpret technical computer manuals.Ability to work independently, or with minimum amount of supervision and achieve high performance levels despite frequent distractions and interruptions.Extensive knowledge of principles and methods applied to information technology infrastructure, planning, implementation, and management.Extensive knowledge of the body of available and current information resources applicable to the department's functions for technical research purposes and for special projects as may be assigned.Ability to organize work, establish priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, division and department heads, public/private sector contacts, and County Administration.Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools, and techniques applied to diverse IT Support in complex multi-platform networked environments.Extensive knowledge of various current technologies relevant to existing applications, systems, and/or upcoming installations, e.g., voice/data network technologies.Reasoning:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Work Environment:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
