Embedded Systems Engineer for Next-Generation IoT SystemsLevel of qualifications required: Graduate degree or equivalentFunction: Temporary scientific engineerAbout the Research Centre or Inria DepartmentThe Inria Saclay-Île-de-France Research Centre was established in 2008. It has developed as part of the Saclay site in partnership with Paris-Saclay University and with the Institut Polytechnique de Paris since 2021.The centre has 39 project teams, 27 of which operate jointly with Paris-Saclay University and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris. Its activities occupy over 600 scientists and research and innovation support staff, including 54 different nationalities.ContextThe position is part of the 5G-mMTC research project aimed at deploying a 5G cellular network oriented towards "massive IoT", compatible with 4G technology. The use cases are the Smart-Grid, in partnership with EDF, and the connected bike, in partnership with the French Cycling Federation (FFC).As part of this project, a 5G test platform is being deployed as an extension of the existing large-scale IoT platform FIT IoT-LAB, incorporating 5G connectivity and AI capabilities at the edge. It is also linked to advanced platforms developed in the PEPR "Future Networks" and in the project SLICES.The developed platforms are remotely accessible large-scale open platforms for experimenting with the development, optimization, and validation of advanced IoT network protocols, including highly constrained sensor networks and embedded systems.AssignmentThe person recruited will be part of a team that develops advanced platforms for experimenting with IoT systems. They will be specifically in charge of the software developments for embedded systems:Developing system-level software and drivers to support communications through modern cellular modules (5G, 5G RedCap, eRedCap, etc.) to construct an end-to-end IoT solution for communication with private 5G networks.Contributing to developing embedded AI research ideas, experimenting with, porting, and improving existing TinyML (embedded AI) software.Developing components and integrating existing software to run an entire end-to-end IoT system for applications with modern chips (such as ARM Ethos NPU), modern protocols (such as LWM2M), and modern communications (such as private 5G networks with eRedCap).Developing control software to remotely manage these embedded systems as they are integrated into the experimental platforms.Developing software to benchmark and perform whole system optimization (embedded system + communication + edge server).We ideally target embedded devices with microcontrollers (i.e., without Linux, and with embedded OS such as RIOT), but we are also interested in embedded Linux.This mission will take place in the Inria research center in Saclay and will be in collaboration with different academic (Telecom Paris, UVSQ, etc.) and industrial partners (MicroEJ, Sequans, etc.).Main ActivitiesEmbedded system software developmentSkillsTechnical Skills and Level Required:- Knowledge and mastery of low-level C programming language and tools, and embedded systems.Languages:- Good command of scientific English.Benefits PackagePartial reimbursement of public transport costsLeave: 7 weeks of annual leave + 10 extra days off due to RTT (statutory reduction in working hours) + possibility of exceptional leave (sick children, moving home, etc.)Possibility of teleworking and flexible organization of working hoursProfessional equipment available (videoconferencing, loan of computer equipment, etc.)Social, cultural, and sports events and activitiesTheme/Domain: Networks and TelecommunicationsSoftware engineering (BAP E)Warning: You must enter your e-mail address in order to save your application to Inria.
